A butterfly is a daytime flying insect. The butterfly life cycle consists of four parts - egg, larva, pupa and adult. It is a popular belief that butterflies have a very short lifespan. Butterflies usually lay their eggs on plants, fixing them to leaves with a special glue-like substance they produce which hardens rapidly. The egg stage lasts several weeks. Butterflies are widely used as various objects of art and jewellery. They are also a popular motif in the visual and literary arts.
